Stem Cells and Precision Medicine

The Brain Health Consortium aims to discover precision therapeutics—individualized therapy—tailored for an exact condition. We use advances in ‘omics (transcriptomics, epigenomics, proteomics, metabolomics), CRISPR gene editing, and emerging methods for “disease-in-a-dish” models (which re-create the process of human disorders using the patient’s own stem cells) to accelerate discoveries which lead to cures. Our researchers generate human and non-human primate cell-based systems to evaluate novel biology or genetic variation, provide tools for drug screening, and in certain instances, create replacement cells and organs. At the heart of the Brain Health Consortium is the newly established UTSA Stem Cell Core – the first of its kind in the UT system.
